No playing time? No problem.
The Westinghouse Bulldogs steamrolled the Windber Ramblers 61-6 to open their 1A PIAA state playoff run on Friday, November 15, not showing an ounce of rust despite more than half their starters having played just one game in the past month, their October 26th City League Championship win over Taylor Allderdice.
That earned the Bulldogs—the last Pittsburgh City League team remaining in this year’s playoff field—a double bye entering the 1A bracket, and it seems Westinghouse spent their time off well.
While the Ramblers struck first after a fumble recovery gifted them a short field, Westinghouse didn’t let that blip linger. The Bulldogs immediately counter punched with a 57-yard touchdown reception from senior receiver Lloyd Penn, then went on to score 20 unanswered points in the first quarter and 47 before the half. Playing with a running clock for the duration of the second half, sophomore Jordan Reid began the third quarter with a kickoff return touchdown.
Westinghouse made the state championship game in each of the past two seasons, but this potential title run will look different as the Bulldogs dropped from 2A to 1A over the summer. Up next Westinghouse will face an excellent Bishop Guilfoyle squad in the state quarterfinals. Because the Bulldogs are playing in the eastern half of the bracket this season, we could see them face off against a WPIAL squad like Fort Cherry or Clairton in the state championship game should they make it that far… a matchup to anticipate for any fans of Western Pennsylvania football.
