Pitt QB Eli Holstein ‘Not Cleared’ for Louisville Game Yet

Eli Holstein is still questionable for the penultimate game of the Pitt season.

Pat Narduzzi announced Monday at his weekly press conference that Eli Holstein hasn’t been cleared the game against Louisville at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday.

If Holstein is unable to go, Ty Dieffenbach and walk-on David Lynch would back up Nate Yarnell, who started against Clemson.

Yarnell completed 34-of-50 pass attempts for 350 yards with a touchdown and an interception against Clemson, but he was sacked eight times and hit 10 more times in a gritty performance.

Holstein burst onto the scene as a second-year freshman this season, starting his collegiate career with a whole lot of yards and touchdowns (and back-to-back comeback wins against Cincinnati and West Virginia), but he’s struggled in his last four games and been knocked out of two of his last three games with apparent head injuries.

Holstein took a late, high hit from Virginia linebacker Trey McDonaldas he slid on a second-and-4 play midway through the third quarter. Holstein was helped off the field, went to the medical tent and left for the the locker room.

He’s completed 177-of-286 pass attempts for 2,176 yards with 17 touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 323 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, this season.

Narduzzi said after the loss to Clemson that it was way too early to tell who would be starting against Clemson.

“It’s way too early,” Narduzzi said. “We’ll see how Eli is feeling, and that’s a coach’s decision. We’ve got a lot of confidence in Eli. Eli has played well all year, as well. Again, I’ve told you all year Nate Yarnell is a good football player, and you guys saw it out there today, and we’ll see when the grading gets done and see how everybody feels.”

Just let Eli sit out the year. We have a better chance to win with Yarnell than a non- confident concussed Eli.

For the last 4 games he played, Eli showed he needs a better coaching and not ready, especially under pressure – happy feet, and not settling. ELi will have his days. For now, Yarnell is better passer, calm and steadier, and I also think he is a better leader.
