Pitt basketball is off to a 6-1 start to the season, with early high-major wins over West Virginia and LSU and a six-point loss to No. 15 Wisconsin.
Now that we’ve got a few days off between games, I thought i’d look into the stats a bit deeper for this team. When looking into Pitt’s roster, I found that Cam Corhen has been one of the best finishers in the country at the rim, and has had a great season so far when serving as the roller in pick-and-roll situations for Pitt.
Corhen is in the 97th percentile of college hoopers (tied for 22nd) in points per possession when playing as the roller in a pick-and-roll situation (1.714). He has made field goals on 10 of his 13 opportunities in such situations.
Corhen is averaging 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Panthers through seven games so far. He has played 30+ minutes three times so far, including both games at The Greenbrier. He made seven field goals in both of his games at The Greenbrier, setting a season high. Corhen has been as consistent as anyone for Pitt so far, scoring at least 12 points in every game and making at least 50% of his field goals in every game. He has grabbed at least five rebounds in six of seven games so far — the only game in which he did not was in Pitt’s loss to Wisconsin (2).
Before the season, Pitt head coach Jeff Capel had this to say about Corhen.
“He’s not as comfortable scoring in the post,” Jeff Capel said. “Most of his points at Florida State came off of drop-offs, rim runs, and things like that. He’s becoming more comfortable. We think he has the capability to do it. It’s just different. Cam, I don’t think has ever played more than 18 or 19 minutes a game. We want him to be able to play more. How are you going to be able to do that? There’s a different type of conditioning that goes into doing that. The way that they played at Florida State — and it’s a program that I have so much respect for — number one, he’s been well coached. Like, really, really well coached down there. But their style was different. They rotated ten, 11 guys. With that, with never playing 20 minutes a game, averaging for a season, foul trouble. He, at times, could foul a lot there because you were constantly being rotated in and out. So it’s just all of those things.

“Now, he’s talented. He’s really talented. We thought he was good when we coached against him for two years. I think he’s better after having a chance to work with him. He’s an unbelievable kid, he works his butt off, and he’s done that since he’s been here this summer. He’s a great teammate. He certainly brings some things to the table that we have not had, and we’re excited about that. We’re excited about helping him to continue to develop those things, where hopefully he can become dominant. He’s not that yet, but we are hopeful that he can become a really, really good player.”
Nice piece on Cam. He’s easy to like.
