One of the ACC’s projected best teams lost again on Wednesday.
On Wednesday night in the Maui Invitational, Tom Izzo and Michigan State took down North Carolina, who was ranked No. 12 at the time of the matchup.
The Tar Heels are now 0-3 against high-major opponents this season, with losses to No. 1 Kansas, No. 4 Auburn, and Michigan State (OT). The schedule won’t get any easier for the Heels, as No. 9 Alabama awaits them in their next matchup on Dec. 4. UNC is now 4-3 on the year, and its wins have come over Elon, Dayton, Hawaii, and American.
Hubert Davis’ squad is ranked 21st in Ken Pomeroy’s rankings (as of Nov. 28 at 12:30 a.m. est.). RJ Davis, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, was selected as a First-Team All-ACC selection last season and won the conference’s Player of the Year award.
Pitt will take on the Tar Heels on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Petersen Events Center on ESPN. Shortly after, the Panthers will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to face Davis’ team on Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.
North Carolina was ranked No. 9 in the preseason AP Poll this year. Along with Davis, Seth Trimble and Elliot Cadeau returned this past offseason, and make up the top three scorers for the Heels.
In addition, Jae’lyn Withers, Jalen Washington, and Ian Jackson have been solid performers for the team so far.
So far, the ACC only has one team that is undefeated as of Wednesday: NC State. Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, and Miami — all picked in the preseason top-six of the conference — all have multiple losses.
This is terrible for the league. The teams need to win these games.
I have my doubts about Hubert….
So much for dominant blue bloods now that the bag man is available to all who are willing to pay the NIL money to BUY a team. Same applies to FB!
Be thankful we have coach Capel
