Pitt’s Win Drops from Quad 1 to Quad 2

Ken Pomeroy's analytics rankings have updated, and seem to really like Pitt's performance against Murray State.

Pitt’s win over LSU at The Greenbrier was a big one for the team, regardless of what analytics thought of it.

The Tigers are a solid team — they are still 6-1 on the year and should make improvements under Matt McMahon in year three.

Pitt earned the win in The Greenbrier ballroom to open up the event, before losing to Wisconsin in the championship game. At the time of the game and at the time of Monday’s NET rankings release, the win over LSU was a “Quad 1” win. The Tigers were ranked in the top-50 of the NET rankings, and a win over a top-50 team on a neutral court counts as a Quad 1 win.

However, now, the Tigers have dropped out of the top-50. With LSU sitting at 51 in Tuesday’s NET rankings, Pitt’s win over them is now of the Quad 2 variety.

Pitt was ranked No. 5 in the country upon the release of the first NET rankings. The Panthers own a 7-1 record, with a 2-1 mark in Quad 1 games. Those two wins have come over Ohio State on the road and West Virginia at home. The West Virginia team has since won all of its games, and is ranked just inside the top-30 at No. 29.

Check out this article from the NCAA explaining how the NET rankings are calculated. This season is the seventh year in a row that the NCAA is using the NET rankings instead of the RPI rankings.

“The remaining factors [in the NET ranking process] include the Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating,” said the NCAA. “The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for strength of opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.”

Pitt will have another opportunity for a Quad 1 win on Wednesday at Mississippi State.
