Live Coverage: Pitt Class of 2025 National Letter of Intent Signing Day

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi / ACC

While the focus in the new age of college football is the transfer portal, it hasn’t diminished the importance of building rosters off high school commitments on National Signing Day.

It’s an (early) early National Signing Day, so early that Pat Narduzzi wasn’t able to make it the home of any of his class of 2025 commitments, but it’s a class of 20 with all expected to sign — following the loss of four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson and four-star wide receiver DaMarion Fowlkes over the last couple of weeks.

The Pitt class features contributors all across the roster. There’s a dual-threat quarterback, a couple of dynamic running backs, some versatile wide receivers, a bunch of offensive linemen and even a tight end. And the Panthers loaded up on the defensive side of the ball with a few defensive linemen, a few linebackers and a bunch of defensive backs.

Pittsburgh Sports Now can confirm a dozen or so signing day events from the class — either at school, at home or at an unspecified location. And unlike some cycles, there are going to be signing ceremonies throughout the day.

PSN will track and update Pitt’s 2024 recruiting class on Wednesday and beyond. As a commit officially signs his NLI, PSN will update the list.

Update — 8:49 AM

Mason Alexander — CB

High School: Hamilton Southeastern

Hometown: Fishers, Ind.

Date of Commitment: 6/26/2024

Alexander is one of the four-star recruits in the class, a track star who has the speed and fluidity to play cornerback in a tough system.

Alexander — a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from Hamilton Southeastern in Fishers, Ind. — committed to Pitt in June over some serious contenders, picking the Panthers over offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Toledo, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

247Sports rates Alexander as the 371st-ranked recruit in the class (35th-ranked cornerback and seventh-ranked recruit from Indiana) while On3 rates him as the 462nd-ranked recruit in the class (42nd-ranked cornerback and 11th-ranked recruit from Indiana).

Rivals rates him as the 34th-ranked cornerback and fifth-ranked recruit from Indiana — holding a 5.8 Rivals Rating.

Alexander recorded 52 tackles (26 solo), an interception and two pass breakups this season.

Update — 8:43 AM

Joshua Guerrier — S

High School: Ocoee

Hometown: Ocoee, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 7/1/2024

Guerrier is another riser in the class, and in a class of versatile athletes, he’s way, way up there. There isn’t much he didn’t do in his senior season.

Guerrier — a 5-foot-11, 170-pound three-star athlete from Ocoee in Ocoee, Fla. — committed to Pitt in July  over Iowa, Iowa State and USF, along with additional offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, FAU, Illinois, Kentucky, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, Temple, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin.

“For me, it’s not what they did, it’s how I saw the school and how I saw myself being there and making plays,” Guerrier said. “I can see myself definitely making plays, especially with the scheme they have. Their scheme fits me perfectly whether it’s free safety, field safety, so it was the scheme part. And the coaching staff.

247Sports rates Guerrier as the 27th-ranked athlete and 64th-ranked recruit from Florida while Rivals rates him as the 17th-ranked athlete and 72nd-ranked recruit from Florida — holding a 5.7 Rivals Rating.

On3 rates him as the 51st-ranked cornerback and 61st-ranked recruit from Florida.

Guerrier completed four pass attempts for 40 yards, carried the ball 31 times for 375 yards (37.5 yards per carry) and hauled in 32 receptions for 675 yards (21.1 yards per reception) and five touchdowns. He added 60 tackles (42 solo), six tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions and three pass breakups. And added 350 yards on punt returns and 443 yards on kick returns.

Update — 8:36 AM

Jordan Fields — OT

High School: North Shore

Hometown: Houston, Tx.

Date of Commitment: 7/12/2024

Jordan Fields — a 6-foot-6, 265-pound offensive lineman from North Shore in Houston, Tx. — had to push back his initial commitment date a few times, but it was all to wind up with the Panthers.

He made additional official visits to Toledo (June 7), Kansas (June 19) and Houston (June 21), but Pitt is in good shape. He holds offers from Arkansas State, Houston, Kansas, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Memphis, North Texas, Pitt, SMU, Toledo, Tulane, Tulsa and UTSA.

“They made me feel like I was at home still, even though I wasn’t,” Fields said. “It was just the vibes that the coaches and the players gave me. I definitely feel like I’ll be safe out there, and I’ll definitely be developed as a man. I’m young. I’m leaving my family. I’m 16. I’m going to be going to college at 17. I’m going to be pretty young when I’m going to college. I’m going to need some great mentors and people that I can look up to and they can lead me. And I feel like I could definitely get that from Pittsburgh.”

247Sports rates Fields as the 53rd-ranked offensive tackle and 107th-ranked recruit from Texas while On3 rates him as the 47th-ranked offensive tackle and the 84th-ranked recruit from Texas.

Rivals hasn’t ranked him, but he does hold a 5.6 Rivals Rating.

Update — 8:32 AM

Torian Chester — IOL

High School: Westover

Hometown: Albany, Ga.

Date of Commitment: 6/22/2024

Torian Chester — a 6-foot-5, 315-pound interior offensive lineman from Westover in Albany, Ga. — is one of the four offensive lineman — two interior offensive linemen — in the class.

Chester committed to Pitt over offers from Buffalo, Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Liberty, Pitt, South Alabama, Tulane and Wofford.

“Coach Darveau kept a buck with me,” Chester told PSN earlier this month. “He was like, ‘Hey, we like your family and me and the offensive coordinator want to offer you, we’re just waiting on the head coach.’ And one thing I can say about that is I like how after being recruited so many times, I like how the offensive line coach kept it a buck with me and made sure he communicated with me on where things sit with me and the head coach.”

247Sports rates Chester as the 62nd-ranked interior offensive lineman and 96th-ranked recruit from Georgia while On3 rates him as the 97th-ranked interior offensive lineman and 122nd-ranked recruit from Georgia.

Update — 8:28 AM

Mason Heintschel — QB

High School: Clay

Hometown: Oregon, Ohio

Date of Commitment: 3/24/2024

Heintschel — a 6-foot-2, 200-pound three-star quarterback from Clay High in Oregon, Ohio — took his first visit to Pittsburgh during the spring and knew right away where he was meant to be.

“I just knew as soon as I stepped foot on campus that this was the place for me,” Heintschel told PSN. “It was home. Getting to meet all the coaches and build relationships with them over the past few months and even on that visit, it was just a no-brainer for me.”

Heintschel committed to Pitt over offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Kent State, Liberty, Ohio and Toledo, and after his recruiting process picked up over the last month, he initially thought that he was going to wait to make any sort of decision. But he couldn’t deny the love he felt for the Panthers.

247Sports rates Heintschel as the 991st-ranked recruit in the class (58th-ranked quarterback and 48th-ranked recruit from Ohio) while On3 rates him as the 768th-ranked recruit in the class (52nd-ranked quarterback and 27th-ranked recruit from Ohio). Rivals does not appear to have rated him yet.

Heintschel has completed 170-of-241 pass attempts (70.5%) for 2,240 yards and 34 touchdowns, adding 721 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, in nine games this season.

Update — 8:20 AM

Jaylin Brown — RB

High School: Cardinal Newman

Hometown: West Palm Beach, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 12/04/2024

Jaylin Brown — a 5-foot-10, 195-pound three-star running back from Cardinal Newman in West Palm Beach, Fla. — committed and signed with the Panthers. He was initially committed to Louisville.

Brown committed to Pitt over offers from Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Boston College, Charlotte, UConn, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, JMU, Kentucky, Liberty, Louisville, UMass, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Tulane, Western Kentucky and Western Michigan.

Brown had been committed to Louisville his entire senior season but decommitted on Nov. 21 and reopened his recruitment. It only allowed the Panthers, who initially offered him back in January, to jump back into the chase.

247Sports rates Brown as the 88th-ranked running back and 136th-ranked recruit from Florida while On3 rates him as the 100th-ranked running back and 172nd-ranked recruit from Florida.

Rivals rates him as the 55th-ranked running back in the class — a 5.6 Rivals Rating.

Smith racked up 1,098 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Cardinal Newman, an 8.3 yards per carry clip, and he was one of the better running backs in South Florida.

Update — 8:15 AM

Denim Cook — DE

High School: Bishop Hartley

Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

Date of Commitment: 7/1/2024

Denim Cook — a 6-foot-4, 220-pound three-star linebacker from Bishop Hartley in Columbus, Ohio — is listed by most as a linebacker, but he committed to the Panthers to be an edge rusher.

He committed to Pitt over Virginia, after taking official visits to both programs and held additional offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, UMass, Miami (Oh.), Ohio, Purdue and Toledo.

247Sports rates him as the 101st-ranked linebacker and 36th-ranked recruit in Ohio while On3 rates him as the 125th-ranked linebacker and 49th-ranked recruit from Ohio. Rivals rates him as the 31st-ranked recruit from Ohio — a 5.6 Rivals Rating.

He caught two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown as a senior, but his season was cut short by an injury. He was ultra productive (22 tackles for loss and 15 sacks) as a junior.

Update — 8:09 AM

Emmanuel Taylor — LB

High School: Green Run

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.

Date of Commitment: 6/22/2024

Emmanuel Taylor — a 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete from Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, Va. — has the type of tweener build that fits what Ryan Manalac wants as a Pitt linebacker.

He committed to Pitt over a list of offers that included Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, Liberty, Marshall and Virginia Tech.

“I believe that I have the … I didn’t want to say aggression, I tried to find another word for it, but I have that real dog in me,” Taylor said. “I know how to hit.”

247Sports rates Taylor as the 121st-ranked athlete and 38th-ranked recruit from Virginia while On3 rates him as the 86th-ranked linebacker and 32nd-ranked recruit from Virginia. Rivals rates him as the 34th-ranked recruit from Virginia — a 5.5 Rivals Rating.

Update — 7:57 AM

Shawn Lee Jr. — CB

High School: Milford Academy (N.Y.)

Hometown: Harrisburg, Pa.

Date of Commitment: 6/19/2024

Shawn Lee — 5-foot-10, 170-pound three-star athlete from Harrisburg in Harrisburg, Pa. — wasn’t able to play his senior season at Harrisburg, so he went the LeSean McCoy route and played at Milford Academy.

Lee committed to Pitt over offers from Akron, Buffalo, UConn, Howard, Iowa State, JMU, Kent State and North Carolina State. He’s a recruit who flew under the radar during his recruitment likely because of his size.

247Sports rates Lee as the 101st-ranked athlete and 22nd-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania while On3 rates him as the 94th-ranked cornerback and 20th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania.

He starred on both sides of the ball at Harrisburg as a junior, racking up 3,721 yards and 45 total touchdowns (1,451 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground) and 47 tackles (32 solo), four interceptions and seven pass breakups. The lack of major interest is surprising, but it may have to do with his size.

Update — 7:50 AM

Cole Woodson — S

High School: Battlefield

Hometown: Haymarket, Va.

Date of Commitment: 7/1/2024

Cole Woodson — a 6-foot-1, 190-pound three-star defensive back from Battlefield in Haymarket, Va. — committed to Pitt in July, the second Woodson brother to join the ACC.

Woodson committed to the Panthers over offers from UConn, Duke, JMU, Minnesota, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

“I feel like I had a really good relationship with the coaches there, coach Sanders and coach Collins, they’ve been recruiting me — they were my fourth offer or whatever, they were recruiting me really hard,” Woodson said. “I feel like they’re great coaches, great men and I think there’s a big development piece at Pitt, with the DBs especially that I’ve seen. And that really stood out to me, along with being able to get a solid education.”

247Sports rates Woodson as the 56th-ranked safety and 21st-ranked recruit from Virginia while On3 rates him as the 36th-ranked safety and ninth-ranked recruit from Virginia. Rivals rates him as the 37th-ranked recruit from Virginia — a 5.5 Rivals Rating.

Woodson turned his one carry on offense into a 31-yard touchdown, caught 15 passes for 364 yards (24.3 yards per reception) and five touchdowns and racked up 27 tackles (26 solo), two interceptions and two fumble recoveries on defense.

Update — 7:42 AM

Tony Kinsler — WR

High School: Spruce Creek

Hometown: Port Orange, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 5/13/2024

Kinsler is perhaps the most versatile weapon in the class, which says a lot considering his contemporaries in the class.

Kinsler — a 5-foot-11, 165-pound wide receiver from Spruce Creek in Port Orange, Fla. — committed to Pitt over offers from Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, FAU, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Marshall, UMass, Tulane, USF, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Western Michigan.

“I’m going to be playing slot, a little bit of wideout and he said I’d be getting the ball at running back, too,” Kinsler said. “Basically just giving me the ball and letting me go to work.”

247Sports rates him as the 714th-ranked recruit in the class (107th-ranked wide receiver and 92nd-ranked recruit in Florida) while On3 rates him as the 651st-ranked recruit in the class (106th-ranked wide receiver and 81st-ranked recruit from Florida).

Rivals rates Kinsler as the 15th-ranked all-purpose back and 100th-ranked recruit from Florida — holding a 5.7 Rivals Rating.

Kinsler only carried the ball once for four yards, but he led Spruce Creek with 62 receptions for 905 yards (14.6 yards per reception) and 15 touchdowns.

Update — 7:36 AM

Max Hunt — TE

High School: Plant

Hometown: Tampa, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 6/8/2024

Max Hunt — 6-foot-5, 210-pound three-star tight end from Plant in Tampa, Fla. — is the lone tight end in the class, entering a position room that’s relatively light.

He committed to Pitt over offers from Arkansas State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, ECU, Georgia Tech, Indiana, JMU, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Toledo, UAB, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.

“We’re really tight, talk almost every week,” Hunt said. “He just likes my athletic ability, he wants a tight end that can stretch the field, go vertically, run every route in the route tree and catch the ball. Run routes against DBs and linebackers. A versatile guy, not necessarily an inline blocking type of tight end like it used to be. More of a dynamic type of athlete.

247Sports rates Hunt as the 58th-ranked tight end and 147th-ranked recruit from Florida while On3 rates him as the 44th-ranked tight end and 89th-ranked recruit from Florida. Rivals hasn’t rated him yet, but he holds a 5.5 Rivals Rating.

Hunt hauled in 17 receptions for 292 yards (17.2 yards per reception) and three touchdowns as a senior.

Update — 7:32 AM

Shep Turk — OL

High School: Thomas Jefferson

Hometown: Jefferson Hills, Pa.

Date of Commitment: 5/13/2024

Shep Turk — a 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman from Thomas Jefferson in Jefferson Hills, Pa. — committed to Pitt way back in May, serving as the first and only WPIAL commitment in the class.

Turk committed to Pitt over offers from Army, Bowling Green, Bucknell, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Lehigh, Navy, Maine, Monmouth, Stony Brook, Temple and UMass. The Panthers were his first — and only — Power Five offer, but the relationship with the new coaching staff won him over.

“I’m someone that wants to help a lot in the community and do good things off the field,” Turk said. “But as a player, it’s a different mode when I get on the field. It’s not the nice guy anymore; it’s smash-mouth football, that’s what I play at my high school and want to bring to Pitt.

“I want to win a championship. I want to bring one back. I’m excited to be on the team, and I just want to do something special there.”

247Sports rates Turk as the 41st-ranked offensive lineman and 14th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania while On3 rates him as the 53rd-ranked interior offensive lineman and 17th-ranked recruit from Pennsylvania.

Update — 7:28 AM

Bryce Yates — WR

High School: Matoaca

Hometown: Chesterfield, Va.

Date of Commitment: 4/21/2024

Bryce Yates — a 6-foot, 160-pound three-star athlete from Matoaca High in Chesterfield, Va. — committed to the Panthers way back in the spring, one of the first commitments in the class.

Yates held offers from Appalachian State, Buffalo, Charlotte, Duke, East Carolina, JMU, Marshall, Maryland, UMass, Old Dominion, Pitt, Temple and Yale. Still, with official visits previously scheduled for Duke and Pitt, it came down to the two ACC programs.

“Their coaching staff was just amazing off the rip,” Yates told PSN. “When (Pat Narduzzi) made those changes with the new receiver coach, new offensive coordinator, they stepped in and did a pretty good job making me feel wanted.

“When I went up there for practice, they made me feel at home and I know I can trust them. And I know that if I go in and work hard my freshman year, I’ll have a chance to make an impact on the team.”

247Sports rates Yates as the 38th-ranked athlete and the 19th-ranked recruit from Virginia while On3 rates him as the 146th-ranked wide receiver and 26th-ranked recruit from Virginia. Rivals rates him as the 29th-ranked recruit in Virginia —a 5.6 Rivals Rating.

Yates slid into the quarterback role as the best athlete on the team, completing 143-of-256 pass attempts (56%) for 2,176 yards with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions, adding 59 carries for 388 yards (6.6 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns and six tackles (all solo) and two interceptions as a senior.

Update — 7:24 AM

Synkwan Smith — RB

High School: Roswell

Hometown: Roswell, Ga.

Date of Commitment: 6/23/2024

Smith is one of the most underrated recruits in the class, an explosive running back who plays a bit like current Pitt star Desmond Reid.

Update — 7:20 AM

High School: St. Thomas Aquinas

Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 2/5/2024

247Sports rates Sommers as the 141st-ranked defensive lineman and 171st-ranked recruit from Florida while On3 rates him as the 117th-ranked edge and 177th-ranked recruit from Florida. Rivals rates him as the 47th-ranked strong-side defensive end — a 5.6 Rivals Rating.

Sommers racked up 45 tackles (19 solo), 11 tackles for loss and six sacks on a very talented St. Thomas Aquinas defense.

Hometown: Olney, Md.

Date of Commitment: 6/10/2024

He committed to Pitt over offers from Baylor, Bowling Green, Cal, Charlotte, Duke, Florida, Kent State, Marshall, UMass, Memphis, North Carolina, South Carolina, Temple and Towson.

“It just felt like the spot for me,” Thompson told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “It felt like home. Real genuine, real kind and it just felt like a great family atmosphere — school and all. It was just a brotherhood over there that could develop me to the next level.

“It wasn’t the plan, but going there, being there for three days, it changed my decision to just I want to commit. Everything they did was great, I loved the three days. Everything that they were telling me led me to the decision.”

247Sports rates Thompson as the 89th-ranked linebacker and 27th-ranked recruit from Maryland while On3 rates him as the 90th-ranked linebacker and 24th-ranked recruit from Maryland.

Rivals rates him as the 55th-ranked linebacker and 18th-ranked recruit from Maryland — a 5.7 Rivals Rating.

Update — 7:12 AM

Ja’Kyrian Turner — RB

High School: South Sumter

Hometown: Bushnell, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 6/9/2024

Turner — a 5-foot-9, 160-pound three-star athlete from South Sumter in Bushnell, Fla. — had such a good trip to Pittsburgh for his official visit that he had to tell the Pitt coaches he committed before flying home to Central Florida.

“Coach Kade got a great offense, he knows how to get his players the ball, he knows how to move the ball down the field,” Turner said. “He just knows what he’s doing with the ball offensive-wise. He said I can fit right in and come in and make a big impact.”

Turner committed to Pitt over offers from Buffalo, Delaware, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, FAU, Nebraska, Texas State, USF, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.

247Sports rates Turner as the 95th-ranked athlete and 135th-ranked recruit from Florida while On3 rates him as the 63rd-ranked athlete and 187th-ranked recruit from Florida. Rivals hasn’t rated him yet, but he holds a 5.5 Rivals Rating.

Hometown: Orlando, Fla.

Date of Commitment: 6/10/2024

He committed to Pitt over offers from Appalachian State, Boston College, Bryant, Central Michigan, Duke, Lafayette, Pitt, Syracuse, UConn, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.

“Daoust is my guy,” Anderson said. “He’s just a truly loving guy, high energy; that’s just something I want to be around personally. He’s the type of guy who’s genuine, and that’s really important for me as a player. He knows you don’t run through a brick wall for someone that ain’t showing you that same love.”

247Sports rates Anderson as the 96th-ranked edge and 34th-ranked recruit from New Jersey while On3 rates him as the 87th-ranked edge and 104th-ranked recruit from Florida.

Hometown: London, England

Date of Commitment: 6/16/2024

Pat Narduzzi and the Panthers secured a commitment from Akram Elnagmi — a 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from the NFL Academy — from way out in London, England.

“It means a lot,” Elnagmi said. “It’s definitely a testament to my hard work because I’ve always had the size, but the work ethic has been high since day one. It was just about doing the right things at the right times to get me in that position. Obviously, I was blessed with an offer from Eastern Michigan, and that’s something I’ll remember because that was my first offer ever from any school. So, I still hold it very close to my heart, but to get the opportunity to play at an even bigger level is definitely something special to me, and I will not take it for granted.”

He committed to Pitt over offers from Campbell, Eastern Michigan, Florida A&M and Virginia.

247Sports rates him as the 114th-ranked offensive tackle and top-ranked recruit from England while On3 rates him as the 100th-ranked offensive tackle in the class. Rivals has given him a 5.5 Rivals rating.
