LSU Beats ACC Team, Bumps Pitt’s Win Back Up to a Quad-1

Pitt’s win over LSU is looking better and better after the Tigers won a game over the ACC’s Florida State in Tuesday night.

With that Tiger victory, Matt McMahon’s team rose up to No. 46 in the NCAA’s NET rankings. This made Pitt’s win over them at the Greenbrier jump from a Quad 2 to a Quad 1 win. Hopefully for the Panthers, the Tigers continue their hot streak and stay within the top-50 of the NET rankings.

Pitt guard Ishmael Leggett earned all-tournament team honors at The Greenbrier Tip Off after two games in which he filled up the stat sheet.

This comes one day after the Tigers were outside of the top-50 in the NET. Because of that initial drop outside of the top-50, the win went to the second quadrant for the Panthers. However, now, it sits as a Quad 1 “W.”

Pitt’s win over West Virginia was initially a quad 1 victory as well, as the Mountaineers were in the top 30 of the NET rankings’ initial release. Now, Darian DeVries’ squad is outside of the top-30, making Pitt’s home victory over them a Quad 2 win.

Check out this article from the NCAA explaining how the NET rankings are calculated. This season is the seventh year in a row that the NCAA is using the NET rankings instead of the RPI rankings.

“The remaining factors [in the NET ranking process] include the Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating,” said the NCAA. “The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for strength of opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.”

Pitt will have another opportunity for a Quad 1 win on Wednesday at Mississippi State.
