Pitt Extends Offer to Tall, Productive All-MAC Wide Receiver

The tallest Pitt wide receiver on the roster is 6-foot-1, maybe 6-foot-2 — the M.O. in a Kade Bell-led offense is speed, speed, speed. And that tends to result in smaller, shifter receivers.

Pitt changed it up a bit Monday night with an offer to Miami (Oh.) transfer wide receiver Reggie Virgil.

Virgil — a 6-foot-4, 190-pound rising senior from Apopka, Fla. — picked up an offer from Pitt Monday, along with Miami, Florida State, Michigan State, Florida, Texas Tech, UTSA and Oklahoma.

Special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jacob Bronowski extended the offer Monday afternoon, which makes sense considering the pair spent time together at Miami (Oh.) in 2022-23.

Virgil is a big-body wide receiver who starred at Miami (Oh.), earning second-team All-MAC honors this season. He hauled in 41 receptions for a team-high 816 yards (19.9 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns.

According to PFF, Virgil lined up out wide on just about 90% of his 390 passing snaps this season. He averaged a team-high 2.16 yards per route run with an average depth of target of 18.4 yards. He did a lot of damage on deep balls, hauling in nine receptions for 436 yards and five touchdowns on route run at least 20 yards downfield.

His junior season was a true breakout campaign as he had just one reception in each of his first two seasons at Miami (Oh.) — a 28-yard catch in 2022 and a 34-yard touchdown catch in 2023.

Virgil would be an intriguing mold-breaking wide receiver in the Pitt offense, but it appears there will be no shortage of suitors for him. It will be important to land him on a visit if the relationship is to progress.

Pitt is losing lead wideout Konata Mumpfield next season, and while Kenny Johnson is slated to return (offering a potential leading wideout), it’s a wide receiving corps that got worse as the season progressed.

Johnson, Poppi Williams, Censere Lee, Zion Fowler-El and Tyreek Robinson are the wideouts in line for playing time right now, but it’s clear the coaching staff will look to add to the room.
