Former Pitt Star on the Call for Wednesday’s Pitt/EKU Game on TV

Former Pitt guard Nelly Cummings has signed with a new professional basketball team: Sheffield Sharks of the British Basketball League (BBL). 

A familiar voice will be on the air during Wednesday night’s Pitt game against Eastern Kentucky.

Former Pitt guard Nelly Cummings, who led Pitt to the NCAA Tournament in the 2022-23 season, will be a color analyst next to play-by-play announcer Jason Earle for the game. The Pitt Vs. Eastern Kentucky game will be televised on ACC Network Extra.

Cummings played in Cyprus and Bulgaria last year in his first season as a professional. In Bulgaria, Cummings averaged 16.8 points and 4.4 assists per game for Akademik Bulteks 99 Plovdiv. In Cyprus, Cummings averaged 19.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game as a rookie. He then signed with the Sheffield Sharks of the British Basketball League (BBL) this past August, but did not play for the team.

Most recently, Cummings competed in the Steel City for Pitt’s alumni basketball team, Zoo Crew, in The Basketball Tournament. Cummings played one season for Pitt after starting his career with stints at Bowling Green State and Colgate. In 36 games this past year, he played over scored 11.1 points, dished out 4.8 assists, and grabbed 2.6 rebounds per game. Cummings shot 36% from three-point range as well. He stepped up big in Pitt’s biggest games of the year, scoring 15 points in Pitt’s First Four NCAA Tournament game against Mississippi State and 13 against Iowa State in Pitt’s Round of 64 win. He worked out for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets prior to this year’s NBA Draft, but went un-drafted.

Nelly’s younger brother, Brandin, is currently a freshman guard on the Panthers’ team. He is averaging 5.2 points and 1.7 rebounds per game for the team, shooting 43% from the field and 31% from three-point range.
