Pitt has a type when it comes to wide receiver, and North Texas transfer wide receiver DT Sheffield fits that perfectly.

Sheffield — a 5-foot-10, 170-pound rising senior wideout from Corinth, Miss. — picked up an offer from Pitt Monday, leading the likes of Cal, Oklahoma State, Virginia and UCF in extending an offer.

He looks like nearly a perfect fit in a Kade Bell-led offense.

Sheffield is well-traveled, starting his career at Northwest Mississippi Community College from 2020-22. He transferred to Washington State for the 2023 season but played in just two games, so he transferred to North Texas before this season.

He turned the opportunity into a first-team All-AAC season, leading North Texas with 66 receptions for 822 yards (12.5 yards per reception) and 11 touchdowns — adding four carries for 86 yards and a touchdown.

According to PFF, he lined up in the slot on over 90% of his 373 passing snaps. He was a yards after catch machine this season (559 yards, 8.5 yards after catch per reception) and averaged a team-high 2.37 yards per route run with an average depth of target of just 6.5 yards.

He received the majority of his receptions behind the line of scrimmage (33 receptions on 35 targets for 285 yards and two touchdowns), but he hauled in five of 10 targets downfield for 224 yards and four touchdowns. So, there’s some versatility.

He has just one season of eligibility remaining and told ESPN that he wants to play for a Power Four program.

Pitt is losing lead wideout Konata Mumpfield next season, and while Kenny Johnson is slated to return (offering a potential leading wideout), it’s a wide receiving corps that got worse as the season progressed.

Johnson, Poppi Williams, Censere Lee, Zion Fowler-El and Tyreek Robinson are the wideouts in line for playing time right now, but it’s clear the coaching staff will look to add to the room.
