Yet another college head coach has decided to step away due to the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics.
Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson announced Monday afternoon his intentions to resign as Deamon Decans head coach, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported.
Per the report, Clawson will remain with the university in an advisory role as he just felt it was time to move on with the changes going on in college football.
The 57-year-old took over at Wake Forest in 2014 and compiled a career record there of 67-69. The last two years have been rough as Wake Forest has finished each season with records of 4-8. Prior to those two seasons, Clawson and Wake Forest went to a bowl game in seven consecutive seasons.
The career high for Clawson was in 2021 when Wake Forest finished 11-3 and made the ACC championship game, where the Deacons lost to Pitt. Clawson was named the 2021 ACC Coach of the Year by the ACC and the Associated Press.
Prior to Wake Forest, Clawson served as head football coach at Fordham (1999 to 2003), at Richmond (2004-07) and at Bowling Green (2009-13).
Clawson’s annual salary at Wake Forest was a reported $3.6 million per season.
