PITTSBURGH — The Pitt Panthers (10-2) brought the heat on a snow-filled day in the city of Pittsburgh as they handled the Sam Houston Bearkats (6-6) at the Petersen Events Center, 110-78.
The win marks the tenth for the Panthers this season as they wrapped up their non-conference schedule by going 9-2 in such games. The win also marks the most points a Panthers squad has scored in a game under Jeff Capel.
Check out the postgame press conferences from the Panthers’ head coach Jeff Capel and his player Guillermo Diaz-Graham, below.
The Panthers managed to jump out to a 17-point lead in the first half behind runs of 10-0 and 11-0 and carried a 12-point lead into halftime. The Panthers extended their huge halftime lead all the way to 32 points before the end of the game.
In the victory, the Panthers shot 59% from the field and 52% from behind the arc while having four players score at least 15 points. Ishmael Leggett and Zack Austin provided 23 points each in the victory while Cam Corhen added 15 and Jaland Lowe posted a double-double on 18 points and 11 assists.
While the Panthers shot the lights out with their 16 made threes, their defense also managed to shut down one of the top scorers in C-USA in Lamar Wilkerson.
Wilkerson entered the game averging just over 20 points per game. While he posted 15 points in the loss to Pitt, it was a quiet 15 as the Bearkats main source of offense was Cameron Huefner as he ended the contest with a game-high 26 points.
The Panthers next game comes on New Year’s Day when they play their second ACC foe of the season when they take on Cal.
