Ben Sauls hit all three of his field goal attempts against Toledo, including a 57-yarder, but it was the swan song for the best Pitt kicker in the Pat Narduzzi era.

Pitt landed a commitment from Murray State transfer kicker James London to help ease the transition, and the Panthers have landed another kicker — with more of a look to the future.

Pitt secured a commitment from 2025 kicker Trey Butkowski on Friday, shoring up the present and future of the position. Butkowski (5-foot-10, 165 pounds) committed to Pitt over offers from Arkansas State and West Georgia.

“I mean to me it was a relatively easy decision, Pitt has a long history of great kickers and coach Bronowski is a guy that I see myself progressing massively under,” Butkowski told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “Besides that it was really just the love I felt from the whole program since the first time I ever even went to a camp that ultimately aided my decision to commit.”

Butkowski picked up an offer from Pitt earlier this month, building a connection with special teams coordinator Jacob Bronowski, but he’s been well aware of the program in Pittsburgh for quite some time.

“I’m super excited about Pittsburgh,” Butkowski told PSN earlier this month. “I train in the same program as Alex Kessman, Ben Sauls and Caleb Junko. It’s a great offer and obviously no one really knows about scholarships or numbers with what is going on with the new roster limitations but PWO or scholarship, Pittsburgh is a great choice and I’m really excited about the opportunity to carry on the kicking tradition. I visited for the Cal game but hope to make my way back up there for a visit in January.”

Chris Sailer Kicking rates Butkowski as a five-star prospect, which is indicative of an FBS freshman starter or scholarship pick. The site write-up includes that he’s a great athlete with a strong leg, capable of hitting from 55 yards and beyond, and that he’s also a capable punter.

The Pitt kicking room now includes London, Butkowski and Sam Carpenter, who has handled a few point-after attempts during his brief Pitt career.
