Pitt guard Jaland Lowe has been one of the best guards in college basketball this year, as just a sophomore.

Lowe, a 6-foot-3 guard from Missouri City, Texas, is a coach’s son. His father, Marland, is a well-known figure in the basketball scene in Texas. He previously coached at the grassroots level for Houston Hoops, among other roles in basketball.

Last week, Jaland was able to visit his family back home in Texas for the holidays, as the Panthers had several days off. His 6 assists per game rank in the top-25 in the nation, but this time over break, he was able to dish out some other gifts.

“Got my brothers some gift cards, jackets, hoodies, little stuff like that,” Jaland said about his Christmas gifts. “But they really enjoyed it, appreciated it, so I love that.”

One of Jaland’s brothers, Eian, is currently starring for Fort Bend Marshall, the same high school Jaland played for years ago. Although he is unranked, the high-school senior guard holds one Division One offer, from Lamar University.

His other brother is 14. Earlier this season, the youngster began to make a name for himself at The Greenbrier. Check out how, below, courtesy of the Post Gazette’s Chris Carter.

“I had no clue it was him at the free-throw line!” Jaland said, referring to his brother’s moment back in West Virginia.

Lowe said that over the holidays this year, he did not face off against his brothers in any one-on-one action.

“They don’t want that,” he said, laughing. “I let them get this break off, but, when season is over, yeah, we’ll get back to it. I just got a little workout in, non contact. Just refreshing the body a little bit. They know what it is. I let them know when I come back, they’re still not messing with me.”

Through Pitt’s first 12 games this year, Lowe is averaging 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and six assists per game while shooting 39% from the field. Lowe has started all 12 games, and is playing more than 34 minutes per game on average.

Against Sam Houston in Pitt’s most recent contest, Lowe had 18 points and 11 assists in a lopsided victory.

Is Jaland Lowe a Top-10 Player in the Nation?
