The transfer portal officially closed on Dec. 28, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more movement in the days and weeks to come — or in the months ahead.
Suppose a player submitted the paperwork to enter the transfer portal by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 28, depending on how long that player’s school took to process the paperwork. In that case, he has until today, Dec. 30, to officially enter the portal. And that’s just for underclassmen.
If a player has already graduated, they’re able to enter the transfer portal at any time. If not, they will have to wait until the next window opens on April 16.
There are exceptions for bowl games, too. In the case of Pitt, with the GameAbove Sports Bowl taking place on Dec. 26, a five-day window to enter the portal opened. So, Pitt players have until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31 to submit their paperwork.
This isn’t to say there’s an expectation that additional Pitt players will enter the portal, but it’s certainly a possibility.
In the meantime, a dead period is in effect through Dec. 31, which means coaches cannot make in-person contact or host recruits on official or unofficial visits on campus. A quiet period opens back up on Jan. 1, through Jan. 5, and it will allow recruits to take on-campus visits. It’s expected to be a busy time for the Pitt coaching staff.
There will be visits starting this week as the coaching staff looks to fill out the roster, and there will be even more targets identified and visits set up before the semester starts later this month.
And even if a recruit isn’t on campus for the spring semester, it doesn’t stop a potential transfer. And it will start all over again following the spring season in April.
