Pitt football’s busy day of landing six transfer commitments on Saturday has carried over to Sunday as the Panthers add another defensive back from the portal.
Kavir Bains — a 5-foot-10, 175-pound safety — entered the portal after five years at UC Davis and after a recent visit with Pitt, announced his commitment to the Panthers on Sunday via X.

Bains began an official visit at Pitt on Jan. 3, PSN learned, and it did not take long for the San Jose, Calif. native to lock in with the Panthers.
After entering the portal on Dec. 16, the Valley Christian High School product picked up offers from Pitt, West Virginia, UNLV, Memphis, New Mexico, Eastern Michigan, Stony Brook and New Hampshire. He has one year left of eligibility as a graduate student.
Pitt is receiving an experienced defensive back that has started 24 games across the last three seasons.
Bains is coming off a season in which he earned Big Sky All-Conference First Team honors after starting 14 games for an Aggies team that went 11-3 and reached the FCS Playoff Quarterfinals. He recorded a career-high 83 tackles (57 solo) and 8.5 tackles for loss, along with three interceptions and a forced fumble and recovery. He also led the Big Sky with 14 pass break-ups.
As a junior, he appeared in 11 games, making four starts while recording 43 total tackles, two pass break-ups and one forced fumble and recovery. In 2022, he played in 11 games and made six starts with 28 tackles, two sacks and five tackles for loss.
With the addition of Kavir Bains, Pitt has now added three defensive backs after the commitments of cornerback Rashan Murray from Cal U (Pa.) and Ohio State safety Jayden Bonsu.
Pitt has now reinforced its safety unit after seniors Donovan McMillon and P.J. O’Brien graduated. Bains and Bonsu will compete for time at safety behind Javon McIntyre and Cruce Brookins.
