Pitt’s women’s basketball team fell to 0-3 in ACC play with a loss to No. 14 Duke on Sunday.
The Panthers traveled down to Durham, North Carolina to take on the Blue Devils, and lost by a wide margin. Pitt scored just 31 points in the entire game, falling 69-31 to Duke. Forward Khadija Faye had 17 of the team’s 31 points. The rest of the eight players that played for Pitt combined for 14 points, with Marley Washenitz contributing seven of those 14.
Mikayla Johnson went 1 for 14 from the field in the loss for Pitt. The Panthers went 2 for 16 from three-point range in the loss, and 11 for 45 overall. Pitt turned the ball over 29 times, with Faye, Washenitz, and Brooklynn Miles each having five turnovers. Three other players had multiple turnovers in the game.
Pitt suffered two major injuries early in the season, losing starters Amiya Jenkins (out for season) and Lauren Rust (missing a significant amount of time). Pitt began the season 5-1, but then went 0-3 in the Paradise Jam MTE in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Pitt returned to Pittsburgh and lost to Duquesne, 73-69, at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt then kept things close in a loss to Miami, and won two-straight games (beating Utah Tech and New Hampshire) to wrap up the non-conference slate.
Pitt is now lost its last two games by a combined 77 points. Georgia Tech beat Pitt by 39, 100-61, on Sunday, Dec. 29. After one week off, the Panthers fell to Duke by 38.
Pitt now returns home to take on Louisville on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. That game will be televised on ACCNX.
