Pitt had success with an Alabama transfer last offseason, and according to a report, the coaching staff is looking into another Alabama transfer.

According to an article by Pete Nakos of On3, Pitt is an early school to watch for Alabama transfer tight end Ty Lockwood. He reported that Boston College, LSU and Missouri are also schools to watch.

Lockwood and Eli Holstein arrived at Alabama together in the class of 2023 as four-star recruits.

Lockwood — a 6-foot-5, 245-pound redshirt freshman from Thompson’s Station, Tenn. — spent the last two seasons at Alabama. He played sparingly during his Alabama career but isn’t far removed from being one of the top tight end recruits in the country.

He recorded his first career catch against Mercer this season, a five-yard pickup. He finished with 28 offensive snaps across five games this season.

Lockwood was rated as a consensus four-star recruit in the class of 2023, holding top 15 position status from 247Sports and Rivals. He flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Alabama the summer before he signed with the Crimson Tide and held offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Florida State, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

It’s early in Lockwood’s second recruiting process, considering he entered the transfer portal on Saturday, but Pitt is a school to watch. It doesn’t hurt to have a connection with Holstein either.

Pitt is losing Gavin Bartholomew to the NFL, but there’s a good mix of veteran experience and youthful potential in the room. Jake Overman is back and expected to take a big step next season, and Malachi Thomas is coming off a true freshman campaign in which he was used often.

Lockwood would be an excellent addition to the room, with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
