Former Pitt wide receiver Daejon Reynolds will have at least one familiar face at UNLV next season — aside from former head coach Dan Mullen.
Chief Borders — a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end from Carrollton, Ga. — committed and signed with the Runnin’ Rebels, the program announced Saturday on social media.
Borders entered the transfer portal on New Year’s Eve, following fellow defensive end Sincere Edwards in doing so. It left the position group thin, but the coaching staff has done a good job revamping the room.
Borders committed to Pitt before the 2024 season, after spending a season at Nebraska and two at Florida before that. So, he’s well-traveled in his collegiate career.
He played 309 defensive snaps this season, the most of his college career, and he recorded 11 tackles (two solo), a tackle for loss and a half sack. He wasn’t an impact contributor for the Panthers, but his exit leaves the defensive ends lacking depth.
Pitt has revamped its edge rushers this offseason, adding a trio of pass rushers in Utah State transfer Blaine Spires, Eastern Michigan transfer Joey Zelinsky and Oregon transfer Jaeden Moore.
The room will be without starter Nate Matlack and rotational pieces in Borders and Edwards next season, so the unit can use all the help it can get out of the portal. Jimmy Scott is the lone starter in the defensive ends room who will return to the team next season — and a likely return for Nate Temple.
A rotation featuring Scott, Temple, Moore, Spires and Zelinsky offers a mix of proven production and exciting potential for the 2025 season.
