Hopewell’s 9th Grader James Armstrong Receives 2nd D-1 Scholarship Offer

College recruiting is a funny and very much unpredictable business.

Talented high school athletes anxiously wait for that first scholarship offer to come in and when the big day happens, it’s normally followed by more and more offers.

That appears to be the case with Hopewell freshman quarterback James Armstrong.

Despite only being in 9th grade, it was just a matter of time for the first college program officially showed their interest and that happened last week for Boo Boo when Kade Bell and the Pitt Panthers offered him. Receiving a D-1 offer as a freshman is rare and even more so is getting one from a Power 4 program like Pitt.

However, that is just an indicator of what the next 4 years will be like for Armstrong.

Less than a week after receiving offer No. 1 from Pitt, a second school has ‘thrown their hat’ into the competition for his services as Sacramento State extended Armstrong an offer this morning.

This is interesting because Sacramento State’s new head coach is Western Pennsylvania native Brennan Marion, a former wide receiver’s coach at Pitt, Texas and the offensive coordinator last season at UNLV. Marion was Pitt’s wide receiver coach when former great Jordan Addison won the Biletnikoff Trophy for the best wide receiver in college football. Armstrong received the offer from Sacramento State assistant coach Darrin Walls, who attended Woodland Hills High School and went on to play at Notre Dame.

As Pittsburgh Sports Now wrote this morning, Sacramento State is the WPIAL a priority in their recruiting efforts.

Congratulations to Armstrong and the Hopewell Vikings football program.
