Pitt Drops to Season-Low NET Ranking

Published

on

Pitt has now lost four-straight games, falling to Duke, Florida State, Louisville, and Clemson — and the Panthers’ tournament resume is looking weaker with each loss.

On Monday, the Panthers came in at No. 33 overall in the NCAA NET rankings. The Panthers own a 12-6 overall record and a 3-4 record in ACC play so far. West Virginia has continued its success following its loss to Pitt, which has helped the Panthers’ resume. That win, for Pitt, is now a Quad 1 victory for Jeff Capel’s team.

Pitt owns a 2-5 record in Quad 1, 1-1 in Quad 2, 4-0 in Quad 3, and 5-0 in Quad 4. Duke, Louisville, and Clemson are the only three ACC teams ranked above Pitt in the NET rankings. The Panthers are still ranked higher than SMU, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Florida State, and Stanford, who all have better league records than Pitt.

Pitt Among ‘Last Four In’ in Latest Bracketology

Pitt’s recent losing streak has caused the Panthers to drop from a projected five seed in NCAA Tournament bracketology to the “Last Four In” category of the bubble. Pitt’s next opportunity comes on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Syracuse at 12:30 p.m.

This offseason, the NCAA added two new metrics to consideration for the NCAA Tournament field.

The two metrics — Bart Torvik’s “T-Rank” and Wins Above Bubble — will be considered when the committee is weighing prospective NCAA Tournament teams.

“The committee has always valued different data points and metrics to assist with its evaluation process, and these two metrics have increasingly been referenced by members in recent years,” NCAA Senior VP of Basketball Dan Gavitt said in a press release. “Adding them to the team sheet ensures that all 12 members easily have access to this data. The Torvik rankings, along with BPI and KenPom, give the committee three predictive ratings, while the WAB, Strength of Record and KPI give them three results-based metrics, all of which, in addition to the NET, will be beneficial to the team evaluation process.”
