Pitt hasn’t been afraid to schedule tough non-conference opponents during the Dan Fisher era, and that’s continuing in 2025.

Nebraska head coach John Cook confirmed that the Huskers will open the 2025 season on Friday, Aug. 22 against Pitt at the Pinnacle Bank Arena — the home of Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball — in Lincoln, Neb.

Cook announced the matchup on an episode of the webcast, Kicking Back with the Cooks.

The matchup is part of an early-season tournament that will also reportedly feature Stanford and Creighton. Additional information about the tournament, the AVCA First Serve Showcase, will be released later.

Pitt is 0-3 all-time against Nebraska, with two of those losses coming in the Final Four — 2021 and 2023.

Nebraska is coming off a 33-3 (19-1 Big Ten) season, advancing to the Final Four. The Huskers were reserve-swept by Penn State, who eventually knocked off Louisville in the national championship game.

Nebraska is losing a lot of seniors, including three-time All-American libero Lexi Rodriguez, but a talented core is still in place with outside hitter Harper Murray and middle blockers Andi Jackson and Rebekah Allick.

Pitt is returning  Olivia Babcock and Bre Kelley, the National Player of the Year and a second-team All-American, respectively, but there will be some major losses to overcome.

All-American Torrey Stafford and top recruit Samara Coleman have both left the program in the last month, for Texas and TCU, respectively, and fellow All-American Rachel Fairbanks, Valeria Vazquez Gomez and Cat Flood exhausted their eligibility.

Pitt has added commitments from transfer portal targets in Oregon outside hitter Sophie Gregoire, Florida State libero Emery Dupes and Illinois setter Brooke Mosher.

The remainder of the Pitt schedule for the 2025 season will be released later this year.
