Kade Bell and the rest of the Pitt staff have been working relentlessly on the recruiting trail, but the Panthers’ offensive coordinator did not have to go very far to deliver the first Power Four offer to 2026 WPIAL prospect Lucas Shanafelt.

On Friday, Bell spent time with Shanafelt during an in-home visit and extended an offer to the 6-foot-4, 235-pound talent out of Peters Township High School in McMurray, Pa. The Panthers are recruiting Shanafelt to play tight end.

Shanafelt’s recruitment has heated up since the end of his junior season, compiling offers from Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Penn, Buffalo, Cornell, Miami (OH), Harvard, Fordham and now the hometown Panthers.

During the 2024 season, Shanafelt paid a visit to Pittfor the home opener against Kent State.

Shanafelt was a key part on both sides of the ball for of a Peters Township team that made its second straight WPIAL Class 5A title game. At tight end, he caught 16 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown. He also lines up at defensive end for an Indians squad that allowed just 10.7 points per game.

The tight end prospect possesses a large frame with speed and a large catch radius, along with a strong blocking presence.

With Pitt offering Shanafelt, the Panthers are now focusing on two Class of 2026 recruits coming out of Peters Township. Peters four-star edge rusher Reston Lehman is a high priority for the Panthers as he holds offers from Penn State, Pitt, West Virginia, Maryland, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, Cincinnati, Boston College, Tulane and others.

Pittsburgh Sports Now will have more on Shanafelt and his offer from Pitt soon.
