Duquesne MBB Loses Second Straight Road Game

The Duquesne Men’s Basketball Team dropped both games of its road trip, falling to Saint Joseph’s 76-72 Wednesday night on what was head coach Dru Joyce III’s 40th birthday.
Duquesne (9-12/4-4 Atlantic 10), which was 8-4 in games when leading at halftime, lost a narrow advantage for the second consecutive game.
The Dukes were paced by Tre Dinkins III, who led all scorers with 27 points, making 11 shots from the field, many of which came very late in the contest.

Cam Crawford totaled 10 points, while Jahsean Corbett had a nine-point, eight-rebound effort, earning his 1,500th career point in this game. Duquesne won the fastbreak points margin 23-6.
Eli Wilborn started for the second time this season as Chabi Barre was held out of the game due to a hamstring injury according to the ESPN+ broadcast.
Saint Joseph’s (13-8/4-4 A-10) saw Erik Reynolds II put in 20 points, while Xzayvier Brown posted 16 points and nine rebounds, aided by a 10-for-11 effort from the free-throw line. Rasheer Fleming recorded 13 points, while Dasear Haskins rounded out play with 10 points.
It was the Hawks who opened play on a 6-2 run. Duquesne earned a defensive stop, which was followed by a Crawford layup, but afterwards, the Dukes missed their next seven shots from the field.
Kareem Rozier’s insertion into the game following the first media timeout, resulted in multiple three-point baskets. Duquesne would make all four of its shots from the field in the second set of minutes, gaining some juice in a largely otherwise uneven first half for both sides.
Dinkins began to get going after the under-eight media timeout burying a one-footed three pointer as the shot clock expired. When Matus Hronsky swished a triple of his own, Duquesne had a three-point lead. Dinkins would steal the ensuing inbounds pass, but the three did not fall.
Despite being held scoreless for the last 3:13 of the half, Duquesne led 26-24 at halftime.
St. Joe’s ratcheted up the defensive pressure with a press which sped the Dukes up. Initially, both sides were matching each other but the Hawks wound up on top at the initial stoppage as Reynolds began to catch fire from long range.
Offensively, Duquesne then struggled to find its shot going 5:44 without making a basket, a streak snapped by a David Dixon three-point shot, his fourth of the season, and third against SJU.
Earlier, Dixon got shaken up, colliding with a camera after throwing an errant pass.
The Saint Joseph’s lead reached double figures after Derek Simpson sank a pair of free throws and after a three-point miss, Reynolds turned an Anthony Finkley pass into two points.
St. Joe’s remained in front, but Dinkins continued to hit shots which extended the game. Even with the Hawks making free throws, Dinkins would trade those two points with three off his hands.
Duquesne was down six points with 29 seconds remaining and both Dinkins and Hronsky missed three-point attempts, allowing the Hawks fans to taste victory.
Dinkins made one final three-point basket as the clock expired and threw his arms up after the result.
Duquesne returns to the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse Saturday for a 2 p.m. tilt against Massachusetts.
