Horizon League Suspends Notable Head Coach Following Game Against Robert Morris

On Tuesday, the Horizon League announced that Oakland men’s basketball head coach Greg Kampe has been suspended for one game following an incident with an official at the conclusion of the Golden Grizzlies’ loss to Robert Morris on Saturday.

“At the conclusion of Saturday’s League contest against RMU, Oakland men’s basketball head coach Greg Kampe engaged with an official in a manner that violated League Operating Regulations and is unacceptable,” Horizon League commissioner Julie Roe Lach said in a release. “As a result, Coach Kampe has been suspended for Thursday’s game against Green Bay.”

The call that sent Kampe over the edge came with 1.7 seconds left in the game. The pivotal call sent Colonials guard Kam Woods to the free throw line for three shots in a tied game. Woods made two of his three attempts and helped the Colonials clinch a two-point win over the Golden Grizzlies.

In the same release, the Horizon League announced that the officials made an incorrect call “near the end of the game” but did not specify which call was the one in question. Due to the incorrect call, the league decided to no longer allow that official to work Horizon League games.

“Related, a significant officiating error occurred near the end of the game. The responsible game official will no longer work Horizon League games,” the release said.

Kampe’s suspension follows the league’s decision to suspend Youngstown St. head coach Ethan Faulkner one game for similar violations. Coincidentally, the league suspended both coaches following games against Robert Morris. Faulkner’s suspension came after the Colonials downed the Penguins by the score of 72-70  last Wednesday night.

While Robert Morris swept Greg Kampe and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies this season, it is possible that the two teams will meet up again in the Horizon League tournament.
