PITTSBURGH — On Monday, Pitt took on Virginia in an ACC battle at the Petersen Events Center.

Check out the postgame press conferences featuring reactions from Jeff Capel, as well as Pitt’s Jorge Diaz Graham, from the game.

With the loss, Pitt falls to 14-8 overall and 5-6 in ACC play. The Panthers will now travel down to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to take on the UNC Tar Heels for the second time in as many weeks. Pitt beat North Carolina at the Petersen Events Center back on Jan. 28, 73-65, behind a big game from Zack Austin, among others. Check out the recap from that game below.

Pitt Outlasts North Carolina for Pivotal ACC Victory

The Panthers surrendered an early 10-0 run and trailed Virginia 11-4 after 6:30 of play.

Virginia kept its foot on the gas, dominating the Panthers early on both ends of the ball and building its lead up to 20, 30-10. Then Capel made the call to take out starters Cam Corhen, Damian Dunn, and Zack Austin, and replace them with Beebah Cummings, Jorge Diaz Graham, and Papa Amadou Kante. The switch shifted the game’s energy in favor of Pitt, but the Panthers still struggled to score the ball. Pitt went into the break trailing 34-19 after making just six of its 20 shot attempts and losing the rebound battle 18 to 11.

In the second half, Pitt’s rebounding struggles, as well as their offensive struggles, continued. The Panthers could not buy a bucket, and Virginia’s shooters kept hitting their attempts. The Cavaliers ran away with the win behind Dai Dai Ames and Isaac McKneely, while Pitt finished the night — a 16-point loss — with ten turnovers and a 41% shooting percentage.

Pitt now travels to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina on the road. That game will tip off on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.
