Game No. 23 of the 2024-25 season for the Pitt men’s basketball team sends the Panthers to Dallas, Texas to take on the SMU Mustangs.

PITT’S OUTLOOK

After a promising 3-0 start in Atlantic Coast Conference play, Pitt has lost all momentum and is now on the outside looking in of the NCAA Tournament. Pitt has dropped three in a row and seven of its last nine games as the Panthers sit with a 14-9 overall record and 5-7 mark in conference play.

The Panthers are coming off a one-point road loss against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday. Pitt led by four points with nearly five minutes to go before the lead exchanged hands several times. However, Pitt was unable to come up with the necessary stops down the stretch, while Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett could not deliver a late go-ahead bucket. Cameron Corhen led the Panthers with 17 points as Lowe added 15.

In the loss, Pitt took a hit to its guard depth as grad senior Damian Dunn suffered a broken elbow and appears to be done for the season.

Pitt currently scores 70.8 points per game in the ACC and has averaged 65.6 points over its last three contests. The Panthers ranked 14th in the conference when it comes to rebounding margin at -0.5.

SMU MUSTANGS (18-5, 9-3 ACC)

Head Coach: Andy Enfield (1st Season)

MUSTANG REPORT

In his first season as the head coach of the Mustangs after 11 seasons at USC, Enfield has his team fifth in the ACC standings and riding a four-game win streak heading into the matchup with Pitt.

It’s been nearly a week since SMU was in action as the Mustangs went on the road and defeated Virginia Tech 81-75 last Wednesday. Matt Cross poured in 21, while Chuck Harris added 20 points. The Mustangs hit 10-of-22 from beyond the arc.

The Mustangs feature five players that average double figures in scoring. Junior guard Boopie Miller, who transferred from Wake Forest, paces SMU with 13.4 points per game. He averaged 5.8 assists per game — fourth-best in the ACC. Harris scores 12.7 points per game, while connecting on 46 percent from three.

Cross (11.9), Samet Yiğitoğlu (10.7) and B.J. Edwards (10.3) round out the top scorers for the Mustangs. Cross — a 6-7 senior forward — leads the Mustangs with 8.3 rebounds per game, while Yiğitoğlu — a 7-2 freshman center from Istanbul, Turkey — averages 6.6 rebounds per night.

SMU sits atop the conference, scoring 82.8 points per game, which checks in at No. 22 nationally. The Mustangs also add 39.7 rebounds per game — first in the conference.
