Pitt basketball’s leading scorer Jaland Lowe will be evaluated for a concussion upon returning to Pittsburgh following the Panthers’ conference loss at SMU Tuesday night.

With 14:39 remaining in the second half, SMU’s Boopie Miller handled the ball and backed into Lowe with force that resulted in an offensive foul. It appeared that Miller’s head collided hard with Lowe’s face, leaving the Panther guard on the floor as he received immediate medical attention.

Lowe would return two minutes later at the 12:27 mark, but would leave the game for good shortly thereafter with 11:40 to go.

According to Pitt head coach Jeff Capel following the game, Lowe went through concussion protocol on the Pitt sideline.

When further asked by reporters in Dallas, Texas, Capel stated that they did not get an early prognosis on Lowe and he will be evaluated once back in Pittsburgh.

“He’ll go through the evaluation when we get back probably tomorrow,” Capel said.

In 26 minutes of work, Lowe finished with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting and two threes. He added five assists, while turning the ball over five times in the 83-63 loss.

The sophomore guard from Missouri City, Texas entered the matchup as Pitt’s leading scorer with 16.5 points per game.

Pitt is already down a key piece of its backcourt as grad senior Damian Dunn suffered a broken elbow in the Panthers’ loss on Saturday at North Carolina.

Pitt, who now owns a 14-10 overall record and is 5-8 in ACC play, returns back home after two weeks away from the Petersen Events Center when it takes on a Miami Hurricanes team that sits at the bottom of the ACC. Tip is set for noon.
