Pitt Baseball Starts 2-0 with Another Late Inning Comeback

If there’s one thing that you can say about the 2025 Pitt baseball team if that they make things interesting and are exciting.
For the second straight game against Eastern Michigan, the Panthers got themselves in a big hole before digging out late to pull a victory from the jaws of defeat. Trailing by four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pitt’s offense scored 7 runs enroute to a 11-8 win.
Offensive standouts today for Pitt were Luke Cantwell, Lorenzo Carrier and David Pedanou, who each collected two hits apiece. Cantwell and Pedanou each drove in two runs, while AJ Nessler clubbed an opposite field 3-run HR in the first inning.
Taking a look at the important bottom of the sixth inning, Gavin Miller, Pedanou and Jake Kendro all walked to start the frame. Then with the bases loaded, Cantwell drove in Miller with an RBI single. Sebastian Piscareta then scored Pedanou with a sacrifice fly to center and Pitt now trailed by just two runs. Ryan Zuckerman drove in a runner to cut the deficit to one and after a walk to AJ Nessler that loaded the bases, Pitt tied the game when Jayden Melendez was hit by a pitch. Gavin Miller drew a bases loaded walk to give Pitt a 9-8 lead and the final two runs scored on a 2-run single by Pedanou.
Pitt’s bullpen was strong late as Daniel McAuliff and Ethan Firoved combined for four shutout innings. McAuliff struck out two batters in 1.1 innings and pitched up his first collegiate win, while Firoved earned the save (2.2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 4 K’s).
Pitt will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch set for Noon.
