MOON TWP, Pa. — Robert Morris is playing its best basketball in years as it clinched the Horizon League’s regular-season title along with the top-seed in the league’s tournament that starts on Tuesday. With that, it is no surprise that the Colonials walked away with some prestigious all-conference awards following their historic regular season.

The Horizon League announced its yearly awards and all-league teams on Monday and the Colonials were well represented as head coach Andy Toole won the Horizon League Coach of the Year, sophomore forward Alvaro Folgueiras won the Horizon League Player of the Year and junior forward Amarion Dickerson won the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year.

Additionally, three Colonials found themselves on all-league teams with one ending up on the all-league defensive team.

Folgueiras earned All-League First-Team honors while Dickerson and Kam Woods earned All-League Second-Team honors. Dickerson, on top of his defensive player of the year award, was one of five Horizon League players selected to the All-League Defensive Team.

For Toole, this is his second Coach of the Year award over his 15 seasons as head coach of the Robert Morris Colonials. His other COY award came back in 2014 when the Colonials were still apart of the Northeastern Conference (NEC).

Folgueiras, the only returning starter from last year’s team, elevated his game immensely from his freshman season to sophomore season. During his freshman campaign, the Spaniard started just six games and averaged only 5.3 points per contest.

During the regular season, Folgueiras averaged 14.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.5 steals per game while playing an average of 29.1 minutes per game. He also finished in the top-25 nationally with 12 double-double over the course of the season.

Dickerson, who transferred to Robert Morris from a JUCO program, bursted onto the scene early in the season as he set the school’s single-game block record with seven in one game. He broke that record later in the season when he recorded eight in one game.

Dickerson finished 10th in Division-I basketball in blocks per game but fifth in total blocks with 76. In 29 minutes per game, Dickerson averaged 13.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks during the regular season.

Woods, a senior that walked on Senior Night, missed a few games early in the season and struggled upon his return but really found his groove as the team did and finished with a strong season. He posted 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists in 35.5 minutes per game.

Robert Morris awaits its quarterfinal opponent which will be decided at the conclusion of Tuesday’s opening-round games. The Colonials home quarterfinal matchup will tip-off at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at the UPMC Events Center.
