Current Pitt running back Desmond Reid took spring break to return home and be with his family in Miami Gardens, Fla. and that meant spending time with his younger brother Tyler Reid.

A conversation about Pitt here and there turned into Tyler considering his college future even as a high school sophomore.

Then, Tyler finally asked Desmond the question and the response was enough for the younger brother to make his commitment to Pitt.

“I was doing a lot of thinking and I love what Pitt has going on in their offense. I was just asking him if I should commit today and he was like, ‘Yeah, it would be the best choice for you,” Tyler told Pittsburgh Sports Now.

Reid — a 5-foot-9, 165-pound running back out of Miramar High School — has long been connected with Pitt offensive coordinator Kade Bell. Bell offered the young recruit when he was at Western Carolina before finally offering him a Pitt offer in January of 2024.

“We got a close bond. I’ve known him since Western Carolina. He recruited me to Western Carolina and then he went to Pitt. I see my career going well with coach Kade,” Reid said.

Pitt still stands as Reid’s only Power Four offer, but it was too good not to act early and commit.

“It’s a good environment. I love what they have going on. I love the coaching staff and coach Kade. I just know what they have planned for me,” he said.

Reid and his family attended every home game in the fall of 2024 to watch his brother star in the Pitt offense and turn into an All-American. During his junior season at Pitt, the older Reid compiled 962 rushing yards, 579 receiving yards and 159 punt return yards, along with 10 total touchdowns. His 154.9 all-purpose yards per game was fifth-best in the country as he earned All-American Second-Team honors.

“Seeing my brother win All-American inspired me to work harder and keep grinding. I learned a lot from him this past season,” he said.

As for the younger Reid, it’s not hard to imagine what he looks like on the field as it closely mirrors what his brother does.

“My play style is like my brothers,” he said. “I can catch out the backfield, run routes and I feel like no linebacker can guard me.”

As a sophomore at Miramar, he compiled 122 carries for 872 yards and six touchdowns.

Reid is now the second player to commit to the Panthers’ Class of 2027 just days after Flanagan High School product and fellow Florida wide out Jacob Thomas made his verbal pledge.

The early Pitt commits have already formed a bond in another sport they both excel in.

“I was just texting him about my commitment. I got a bond with him. We both run track, so I’m definitely going to see him on the track,” Reid said.

Most recently, Reid and Thomas competed in the Louie Bing Invitational. In the 100-meter, Thomas posted a 10.86, while Reid was not far behind finishing with a time of 10.96.

Thomas and Reid are laying the foundation with blazing speed for the Pitt 2027 class.
