Pitt RB Che Nwabuko No Longer with Program

Running back Che Nwabuko is no longer with the Pitt football program after the first installment of the roster was made public with the commencement of spring camp on Tuesday.
A program spokesperson further confirmed that Nwabuko was no longer with the team.
Nwabuko — a 5-foot-10, 180-pound athlete from Austin, Texas — spent three seasons with the Pitt program. He initially joined Pitt as a four-star wide receiver, according to 247Sports, before transitioning to play running back during the 2024 season.
“We made it back in pre-season camp, just didn’t seem like he was a wide receiver, but obviously he’s got good hands because not only did he have a nice run, he had a nice catch,” Narduzzi said back in October. “I think all that time spent at receiver, he was a running back in high school as well. I think all the time spent as a receiver has helped his ball skills out of the back field, which we like to throw it to the backside of the back field as well. I have been impressed with him since he moved him to that position.
As a redshirt sophomore, Nwabuko recorded six carries, 76 yards and a 57-yard rushing score against Youngstown State. He also added two receptions for 15 yards.
After redshirting during his first year with the program, Nwabuko played in all 12 games in 2023 as he registered three rushes for 22 yards. Nwabuko was also sparsely used in the return game and could have been a potential return specialist for the Panthers once again heading into the 2025 season. In 2023, he returned two kicks for an average of 10.5 yards.
Nwabuko was also a member of the Pitt track and field team as he is no longer listed on the roster as well. During the 2023-24 indoor season, Nwabuko competed in two meets. He posted a season best score of 6.91 in the 60 and placed 41st in the 200 at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational.
Pitt’s scholarship running back currently consist of Desmond Reid, Derrick Davis Jr., Juelz Goff and Ja’Kyrian Turner. Freshman Synkwan Smith and Jaylin Brown are expected to enroll over the summer.
