Two major storylines grabbed headlines in the Pittsburgh area on Sunday night: Robert Morris and West Virginia. The Colonials, who won the Horizon League, grabbed. a 15-seed and will be playing in Cleveland against No. 2 seed Alabama. West Virginia — a team that many predicted would safely be in the tournament field — did not make the field.
“Obviously, we are extremely shocked, saddened and disappointed with not being selected for the NCAA Tournament,” West Virginia HC Darian DeVries said in a statement Sunday night. “We strongly believe that we have a resume that is worthy of an NCAA Tournament team. I am incredibly proud of this team and what they accomplished. They poured their hearts into this season and put all their collective efforts into making the NCAA Tournament, and I believe they did that.”

In addition, many local high-school players are now playing for NCAA Tournament teams around the country.
Notably, former Penn Hills guard Daemarr Kelly is one of the players on the list of former WPIAL talent competing in March Madness. Recently, Kelly hit the game-winning shot to send Saint Francis (PA) to the big dance. In addition, Adou Thiero out of Quaker Valley (Arkansas), Royce Parham out of North Hills (Marquette), Ethan Morton out of Butler (Colorado State), and Chris Moncrief (also Saint Francis PA) will be competing in the tournament. To round out the list, former Upper St. Clair guard Tanner O’Grady will be competing for Robert Morris.
