Future Pitt Safety Demolishing High School Records on the Track

Before Pitt safety signee Cole Woodson enrolls over the summer, he is finishing out his days as a high schooler and a track athlete where he is demolishing school records.
Woodson’s speed was one of the many attractive attributes to Pitt safeties coach Cory Sanders and why they wanted to make the 6-foot-1 Battlefield High School (Va.) product a Panther.
“The film pops out. He’s a great returner, he makes some good tackles. The kid is a 10.7 100-meter runner at 195 pounds,” Sanders said on early National Signing Day in December.
Over the weekend, Woodson, who now weighs 205 pounds, set a new personal record in that very 100-meter dash. On Saturday, Woodson clocked a blazing 10.44 time in the 100 at the Patriot Invitational.
The 10.44 finish is also a new school record at Battlefield in the 100-meter dash, which blew the old 10.71 high mark out of the water.

“Cole Woodson’s race [Saturday] was nothing short of phenomenal,” Battlefield track and field coach Van Arnold told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “It’s an incredible achievement, but it’s no surprise to those who know him. This moment is the result of years of dedication and a commitment to doing the little things right—on and off the track. Cole’s work ethic and perseverance have truly paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.”
In the fall, Woodson showcased that quickness and versatility on the football field as he pulled in 15 receptions for 364 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver and totaled 27 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He also returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns.
“What really popped out of film is their versatility,” Sanders said about both Woodson and early enrollee safety Josh Guerrier. “When you see both those guys, they’re kick returners, punt returners, they play offense, they play defense, running back, wide receivers, making a lot of plays out there. That was a really big thing that popped out and started the process for us.”
Woodson committed to Pitt on July 1, 2024 over offers from UConn, Duke, JMU, Minnesota, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
On3 boosted Woodson’s rating to four-star status in the fall as he finished as the 30th-ranked safety in the 2025 cycle and ninth prospect out of the state of Virginia.
