Redshirt freshman Moritz Schmoranzer was a young offensive lineman that Pitt was looking to develop over the coming years.

However, the 6-4, 300-pound German opted to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal following spring camp and the first full year as a Panther.

On Tuesday, Schmoranzer found his second college football home as he committed to Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference, he announced via X.

The commitment came after Schmoranzer was in Boone, N.C. to visit the Appalachian State program on Monday. He selected the Mountaineers over other offers he fielded since entering the portal on April 16 from Liberty, Eastern Kentucky and Bucknell.

App State is coming off a season in which it finished 5-6 overall and 3-5 in Sun Belt play.

This spring at Pitt, Schmoranzer slotted in as a third-team center before suffering an injury in the final week leaving him inactive for the spring game.

He has a background in running track and spent his first year in the United States playing wide receiver at North Cross School in Virginia. He signed with Pitt as a three-star prospect and 71st interior offensive lineman, according to 247Sports.

Schmoranzer entered his second year at Pitt after not seeing the field as a freshman and earning a redshirt. He was the only lineman in the 2024 recruiting class that enrolled early, so this spring marked a full year in Pittsburgh for the Langenfeld, Germany native.

Pitt lost five offensive linemen to the transfer portal with Schmoranzer, walk-ons Graysen and Brody Riffe, redshirt freshman Adham Abouraya and redshirt senior Terrence Enos Jr.
