The Pitt Panthers have landed their first commitment of the spring transfer portal window

Former North Carolina four star cornerback Zion Ferguson tells Pittsburgh Sports Now that he made a verbal commitment to Pitt following his visit to the campus today.

Ferguson (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) didn’t play in any games this past season for North Carolina and will have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

”I committed because Pitt was a school that reached out to me early in the portal,” Ferguson tells PSN. “The relationship that I had with Coach Collins was rekindled and I wanted to take a visit to see the plan Pitt had for me.”

”The visit went well. I love the city vibes of the campus. The coaches were great and they gave upfront honest answers to all of my questions. I just really like the plan that was rolled out for my success as a DB at Pitt. I like that they play a lot of press man coverage. That defensive scheme really work for my strengths as a DB.”

Coming out of Gainesville High School in Georgia, Ferguson was recruited by Pitt secondary coach Archie Collins before eventually committing to North Carolina. Rivals rated Ferguson as the No. 19 rated cornerback in the country and he received an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-American bowl game.

Prior to signing with North Carolina Ferguson held offers from program such as Arkansas Auburn, Colorado, Florida State, Georgia, LSU Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon Penn State, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Pitt lost a handful of cornerbacks during the initial transfer portal window after the 2024 season and added to the unit with Cal U transfer and Division III All-American Rashan Murray.

Murray is pushing for a backup role behind projected starters Rashad Battle and Tamon Lynum, along with Shadarian Harrison. Redshirt freshmen Davion Pritchard, Nigel Maynard and freshman Shawn Lee Jr. round out the scholarship options at corner.
