It was a big day of quarterback news for the Pitt Panthers.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, Oklahoma transfer quarterback Cade Gonzales announced that he would be transferring to Pitt. Gonzales previously played for Pitt offensive coordinator Kade Bell at Western Carolina.

Now comes the news that freshman quarterback Julian Dugger plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Dugger announced the news Saturday evening on X.

On one hand this news is a bit surprising because following his bowl game performance, the Penn Hills native seemed to gain the confidence of the coaching staff and would have a role this upcoming season.

Against Toledo, Dugger saw his first playing time and rushed 21 times for 88 yards and one touchdown, while throwing for 72 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

On the other hand, this move was likely made because Dugger didn’t see a path to the field.

Eli Holstein is returning and will be the unquestioned Pitt starter for the next two seasons. However the biggest factor in Dugger’s decision was the development and performance of incoming freshman Mason Heintschel.

The talented freshman from Ohio was impressive and likely showed Pat Narduzzi and Kade Bell that he was ready to play.

Because of his athleticism and potential, Dugger will likely have a long list of teams interested in his services.
