It’s the first time under head coach Pat Narduzzi that a Pitt wide receiver has been selected in back-to-back drafts after Bub Means was drafted in the fifth round last year by the New Orleans Saints.
Mumpfield was one of four Panthers invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in which he posted a 4.59 40-yard dash, 36-inch vertical jump and 10-foot, 4-inch broach jump.
While the 5-foot-11, 186-pound Mumpfield is of average size for an NFL receiver, it’s his route running and excellent hands have stood out to scouts.
During Pitt’s pro day in March, Mumpfield was hoping to show NFL teams his versatile skill set.
“Wanted to showcase that I can change direction on the 5-10-5 three-cone,” Mumpfield said. “I felt like I did that well. I caught everything running the routes. That was something that I wanted to do, just catch everything. I felt pretty confident in my route running getting in and out of breaks, being smooth, being confident.”
Added Narduzzi: “I think he just stacked another really good day of catching the football, running routes and proving what he can do as a football player.”
A native of Hoschton, Ga., Mumpfield emerged as one of Pitt’s most consistent receivers and route runners over the past three seasons.
As a senior, Mumpfield led the Panthers with 52 receptions for 813 yards and five touchdowns as he earned All-ACC Honorable Mention recognition.
In 12 starts as a junior, he led Pitt with 44 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns. Mumpfield transferred to Pitt in 2022 as he compiled 58 receptions for 551 yards and a touchdown.
Coming out of Dacula High School, Mumpfield committed to Akron and burst onto the scene as he earned Freshman All-American honors after totaling 63 receptions for 751 receiving yards and eight touchdowns catches.
