Pitt football has landed a surprising commitment late in the 2025 class and it comes from a nearby WPIAL prospect.

John Wetzel, who had previously signed with Marshall but received a release from his NLI, has flipped and committed to Pitt Wednesday evening, he announced via X.

A source tells Pittsburgh Sports Now that Wetzel was on campus visiting Pitt on Wednesday. His decision to flip his commitment came down between Pitt and West Virginia.

The 6-foot, 195-pound talent from Greater Latrobe High School joins Pitt as a defensive athlete, who could line up either at safety or linebacker.

Wetzel committed to Marshall in June of 2024 over offers from West Virginia, Cincinnati, Boston College, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Delaware, Akron, Kent State, Temple, Old Dominion, Robert Morris, Lehigh and Monmouth.

As a senior, Wetzel starred on both sides of the ball for the Wildcats. At quarterback, he threw for 914 yards, while adding 1,076 rushing yards on the ground. Defensively, he totaled 81 tackles, five for loss and returned a touchdown for an interception. He was named to the Class 5A All-State team.

As a junior, he compiled an impressive stat line offensively, passing for 1,289 yards and 17 touchdowns, while adding 1,117 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. At safety, he totaled 73 tackles, three interceptions, including a pick-six, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

Rivals and 247Sports rates Wetzel as a three-star prospect with the latter ranking him as the 26th player in the state of Pennsylvania.

Wetzel become the 22nd member of Pitt’s 2025 class.
