Duquesne Big Recruiting Win With Seton LaSalle Star Will Martin

A huge recruiting win for head coach Jerry Schmitt and the Duquesne football program came this week.

Despite having a nice list of offers, Duquesne received a commitment last night from talented Seton LaSalle 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker/tight end Will Martin.

Martin selected the Dukes over other offers from Albany, Robert Morris, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Akron and Toledo.

Last season with Seton LaSalle, Martin finished with 99 tackles, four sacks, 18 tackles for loss and one interception.

“The biggest three things to me on committing to Duquesne University was first off a phenomenal coaching staff,” Martin told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “I was able to be myself around them which was a huge thing for me. Being comfortable with a staff who I’m going to be around for four years was one of my top priority’s.”

“Second reason had to be the opportunity to stay home,” Martin added. “This was a deciding factor for me because I want my family to be in the stands watching my games. My family has played a huge role in my football career so far. Their endless support absolutely means the world to me. With the opportunity to play at Duquesne, I will be able to have my whole family watching.

“Lastly, I chose Duquesne because of the incredible education I will receive from going here. That is the number one reason I am going to college, to get an education and what means the most to me and my parents.”

Duquesne had to win a recruiting battle over a number of quality programs, including ones in the MAC Conference.

Along with the reasons he listed, the bond created with Schmitt and the Duquesne staff was another huge reason.

“The relationship I grew with the staff was great and is still ongoing,” Martin said. “Coach Jacobs is a tough coach who already has my full respect. I am very excited to work with him and all of the other coaches.

“The head coach, Coach Schmitt is an amazing person that will help continue to form me into a young man and also learn the game more. He is well respect and has built a winning program.”

In the end, family and staying in the city of Pittsburgh were just too important for Martin. With this decision out of the way, Martin will be able to relax and enjoy his senior season while winning a WPIAL Championship at Seton LaSalle.

“Being able to stay home and play college football at the Division 1 level is truly such an unbelievable blessing,” said Martin.  “I have worked so hard to get to this position and I am finally here able to commit to a school I love, is amazing feeling. I’m able to stay in a city, that I love and have grown up in is very awesome.”
