Jeff Capel will return to USA Basketball, where he has coached several times in his career.

Along with his role as head coach at Pitt, Capel will serve on the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee, according to a press release from the University.

The USA Basketball Men’s U19 Junior Team Training Camp will take place on June 14 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Once the roster is determined, 12 players will travel to compete in the U19 Men’s World Cup tournament in Switzerland. That event will take place from June 28 to July 6.

According to the release, the participants in the training camp either recently finished their first year of college or are a member of the high-school classes of 2025 and 2026.

Capel has spent many years as a part of the USA Basketball family, notably earning a Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. That team included NBA stars such as Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Paul George, and others. He also spent time as a staff assistant on the US Men’s National Team in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, in which the team earned a Gold Medal. That team included Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Irving, James Harden, Klay Thompson, Rudy Gay, Derrick Rose, and others.

Capel has spent seven years as the head coach of the Panthers. He owns a 114-107 record at Pitt, good for a 52% winning percentage. After back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2022-23 and 2023-24, the Panthers took a step back this past season, going 17-15 and missing out on postseason action for the second-straight year. Capel won the ACC Coach of the Year award in the 2022-23 season and led the team to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.
