Recruiting Update on Elite Pitt Target Roman Siulepa

PSN wanted to provide an update on Pitt basketball’s attempt to land elite prospect Roman Siulepa.

Back at the beginning of May, I reported that Pitt was the top contender and would eventually land a commitment from Siulepa, the No. 1 prospect in Australia.

The timeline we gave was that this would happen sometime in June. But as we’re coming to the end of the month, have things changed?

The answer to that is ‘No’, although it’s taken a bit longer than expected.

A well-connected source tells PSN that “it’s 100% happening. It’s just taking time. It’ll happen.”

Landing Siulepa would be one of the biggest recruiting wins for Jeff Capel at Pitt considering he’s viewed by several scouts as someone that eventually will play in the NBA.

As mentioned in previous stories, credit former Pitt standout Lamar Patterson for helping the Panthers recruit Siulepa, as the two are teammates in Australia. Another thing that helped Pitt was them previously landing 6’8″ forward Henry Cody Lau from Australia.

Siulepa is a 6’7″, 220-pound small forward, who’s described as an “overpowering physical presence, that fears no battles or collisions and is terrifying in transition and is developing into an unstoppable force on the glass.”

Siulepa is Australian, but has Samoan heritage, which you can tell by the size of him. He’s a very athletic kid and could be a star in Rugby if he wanted to.

Last year before signing with the JackJumpers, Siulepa was one of the most sought-after international prospects before deciding to stay in Australia.

Siulepa won MVP of the NBA’s BaSiulepa won MVP of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp and MVP of the Australian U20 National Championship.
