Twitter Reaction: Pitt Fails On A Chance to Win Share Of ACC Championship
If there’s such a thing as a trap game, tonight was it for the Pitt Panthers.
First, Pitt was coming off an emotional win over Syracuse. Second, after it being talked about for most of the second half of the season, the Panthers finally entered the AP Top 25 rankings. The scary part was that with a chance to win at least a share of the ACC Championship, Pitt was taking on a Notre Dame team that entered tonight’s game with a record of 10-19 and 2-16 in conference.
Easy win, right? Wrong. All of the factors above didn’t take into account tonight being Mike Brey’s last home game as head coach for the Irish.
The trap game proved accurate as Notre Dame couldn’t miss from the field and Pitt couldn’t hit a 3-pointer, couldn’t make a free and didn’t play defense.
The bad news is that Pitt lost but they still have a chance to share the ACC Championship if they can beat Miami on Saturday.
Despite that, as you can imagine, Pitt fans weren’t happy with tonight’s outcome.
Accept the facts that we sucked today. If we made more 3s and FTs we win

12 hours ago Pitt fans were bitching about NET rankings, a lack of respect and being criminally under seeded. Now they are back to firing everyone associated with the program! pic.twitter.com/fYjt3tkEFp

Like I said…
The winner of Pitt-Miami at the end of the regular season will decide the C̶o̶a̶s̶t̶a̶l̶ ACC basketball championship.

Tough one. Gotta finish strong.

That hurts

Pitt loses by seven.
The Panthers missed 15 free throws.

The cockroaches are out of the woodwork

Let me be clear: there’s 0 silver lining in any part of that game from a basketball standpoint.
But a 7 point loss should’ve been a 30 point loss. A Q4 blowout could’ve been catastrophic. Pitt deserved to be blown out but made it a game at the end. Could make a difference.

Pitt has 14 wins in a Power 5 conference and will play for the ACC title on Saturday – a development nobody saw coming – and yet … the “they are who we thought they were crowd” is gonna be LOUD heading into selection Sunday.
Such a weird year in college hoops.— Will Graves (@WillGravesAP) March 2, 2023
I need to make one thing clear: This being Mike Brey's final home game added ZERO juice to the crowd. The pregame festivities were equal to a team being honored during a media break at a Pitt home game. The players might have been inspired, but this isn't a crazy atmosphere.

Whatever. Onto Miami. #H2P

Damn. We gotta be better than that.

Absolutely brutal from Pitt. Notre Dame effing stinks and Pitt laid an egg of epic proportions. I don’t care who’s retiring. And forget about the ACC title. If this team doesn’t win again, I don’t think they make the big dance. Could be a sour ending to an awesome season.
— Donny Football (@DonChed54) March 2, 2023
Well that was awful
— Zack (@pickettbeliever) March 2, 2023
The biggest reason Pitt lost this one is because they were awful from the FT line. But that’s pretty much never been an issue all season.
What they can focus on? Better defense.
But if they shoot even decently from the FT line this game is a different story.

I didn’t have a reason to dislike Mike Brey until tonight (the reason is he ruined my life)
— Kyle Saxon (@DixonDisciple) March 2, 2023
Now that I think about it, this Pitt would definitely lose to Notre Dame and then beat Miami in Coral Gables

I’m in shock watching these free throws 😳
