Longtime WPIAL basketball coach Rob Carmody of Mars High School resigned on Tuesday night ahead of the 2024-25 school year.

Some big news out of the WPIAL arose on Tuesday night.

Mars head boys’ basketball coach Rob Carmody has resigned from his position, he announced on Tuesday night.

“For the last 26 years I have been proud to represent the Mars School District as the Boys’ Basketball Coach. During that time, I was fortunate that my family and work responsibilities aligned with the demands of overseeing our basketball program. Unfortunately, due to a transitional opportunity at my business, I have resigned my position as boys’ basketball coach. This decision did not come lightly and I am disappointed that I am stepping away from coaching and working with kids.”

Carmody spent 26 years leading Mars’ basketball team, winning nine section championships and two WPIAL championships. The program has made 17-straight trips to the WPIAL playoffs, and has had 13 different players score 1,000 points in their high-school careers. Carmody coached his sons, Michael and Robby, while at Mars. Robby began his college basketball career at Notre Dame, then transferred to Mercer, and this offseason, transferred to Le Moyne. Michael also went to Notre Dame, playing football there. He then transferred to UCLA.

Carmody was sure to thank Mars’ Athletic Director, as well as his players, family members, and more.

“Thank you to Scott Heinauer for taking a chance on me 26 years ago and supporting me as we built this program,” he said on Twitter. “Thank you to my coaching staff and all of the coaches in our youth program. We built a program that was integrated because of your knowledge, experience, and time. Thank you to all the guys who have worn the Mars uniform over the years. It is through your talent, dedication, and toughness that our program is what it is today. The one attribute all of our teams had was togetherness and you guys bought in and built that culture. I am so proud to see what you all have done and excited to see what is next for each of you. No matter what, I will still expect you to be great husbands, fathers, friends, neighbors, and people. We all need “coaches” in our lives and I will be here for each of you.”

“Being a coach is not easy To be successful there are many hours spent away from the ones we love most. For 26 years, I “stole”my family’s time and gave it to my basketball program. I can’t ever give my wife and children back that time, but I am blessed because they understood. Without their love and support, I simply would not have been able to coach. I got to win a WPIAL Championship coaching my sons and I got a hug from my daughter after every game her senior year. Hard to have it better than that. THANK YOU MARS 1-2-3 TOGETHER.”

In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Carmody indicated that he is not retiring from coaching.
