Former Pitt Basketball Star Has Jersey Retired

Former Pitt star Bub Carrington’s jersey was retired on Wednesday night at his high school, St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.

The 6-foot-4 point guard was the No. 91 prospect in the class of 2023 coming out of St. Frances. The Baltimore native committed to Pitt prior to his senior season of high-school ball, and shined in that senior campaign. He then joined the Panthers and starred from the moment he stepped on a collegiate court. In Carrington’s first-career collegiate basketball game, he posted a triple-double in Pitt’s win over North Carolina A&T.

Carrington’s triple-double was the first for a Pitt Panther since Ricardo Greer did so against Villanova in 1998. It’s the fifth-ever in program history and first in 25 years, joining Greer, Darelle Porter (1990-91), and Keith Starr (1974-75), who accomplished it twice in the same season. Carrington became the first Panther player to record a triple-double in his first career game.

Carrington started 33 games for Pitt as a rookie, averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. He shot 41% from the field and 32% from three-point range in his freshman campaign, and alongside Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett, starred for the Panthers in the back court. Carrington went No. 14 overall in the most recent NBA Draft, making his way from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Washington Wizards via trade. Carrington was the first player drafted in the first round from a Jeff-Capel-led Pitt team.

He has now played 38 games for the Washington Wizards in his rookie year, and is averaging 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game for the team. He is leading all rookies in minutes per game, averaging 30, and is second in assists per game.
