After McConnell was recognized, Brantley was not done reading off Scholer’s accomplishments, moments after the latter admittedly was unsure if she would win because of how many nominees she felt were deserving of recognition.
Ultimately, Scholer’s accomplishments which include being a four-time medalist in the 200-yard backstroke and qualifying for 2024 Olympic trials saw her prevail, something which surprised her even as she walked up to receive her award.
“I was honestly really shocked, it was really cool,” Scholer said moments later. “Obviously I’m super proud of all of my accomplishments but it’s really cool to see the athletics department recognize it as well. It was cool that Orla (Egan) was nominated as well, so we got to see those videos wrapping up our career. Dave (Sheets) had really nice things to say which was awesome. I’m just so thankful and appreciative of my time here.”
Indeed, both McConnell and Scholer triumphed over Egan, lacrosse’s Hanna Pawela, track & field’s Hannah Seitzinger and bowling’s Ranelle Ulanday.
Scholer amassed 10 total medals across five events in the A-10 Championship and made the all-academic team in each of her final two seasons.
Moving forward, Scholer is back in the water, now trading her swimming cap for a whistle as she will coach.
“I’m really excited to start coaching, I’ve actually start getting back in the pool every couple of days, so that’s really nice,” she wrapped up. “It’s been fun just to hang out and enjoy the sport without putting too much pressure on it. It’s been weird, I miss the team a lot but it’s going to be really cool getting to move into the next stage of my life and start coaching because I feel like that’s where I’m meant to be.”
