Pittsburgh Olympics Update: Pitt Basketball Player, WPIAL Swimmer Compete

The 2024 Paris Olympics are in full swing across the pond, and several athletes with Pittsburgh ties are overseas competing.
Let’s dive in to their performances in Tuesday’s Olympic action.
First, we’ve got Josh Matheny, who competed in two swimming competitions on Tuesday.
Matheny, an Upper St. Clair (WPIAL) graduate, had a great first race. Competing in the 200-meter breaststroke preliminary competition, Matheny posted a time of 2:10.39, securing his position in the semifinals for the event. Matheny then swam later on in the afternoon in the semifinals, improving his time to 2:09.70 in the event and earning fourth place. He secured his position in the finals for the event, which will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. est.
Next, a former Pitt women’s basketball player competed in the games. Marcedes Walker is representing Azerbaijan in the 3-on-3 women’s basketball event. Walker played just under four minutes for her team in a close 18-16 loss to Spain’s team.
On Wednesday, Walker and her Azerbaijan squad will take on the United States women’s basketball 3-on-3 team at 3:30 p.m. est.
Walker earned All-Big East honors in all four seasons at Pitt, playing from 2005-08. She earned First Team honors in 2006 and 2007. Across all four years at Pitt, Walker averaged at least 13 points and nine rebounds per game.
