Bub Carrington Returns to Roots with Number Change

Former Pitt guard Bub Carrington is rekindling his collegiate stardom in the NBA with the Washington Wizards.
On Monday, Carrington was surprised by the Wizards as he received a new jersey with a different number on the back. Carrington is officially making the switch back to the No. 7 that he wore during his lone season of college ball with the Pitt Panthers. During his NBA rookie season, he donned the No. 8.

Carrington is an exciting young talent for the Wizards after averaging 9.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game as a rookie. He also shot 40.1 percent from the floor and 33.9 percent from beyond the arc in 82 games played — the only rookie to play in that many games this past season.
The 14th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Carrington earned All-Rookie Team honors after becoming the only rookie in Wizards’ history to amass 300+ assists, 300+ rebounds, and 100+ made three-pointers. His 138 made threes set a franchise rookie record and tied for most among rookies this season. His assist numbers were second among rookies and he led the group with 30 minutes per game.
Carrington posted a season-best 32 points against Orlando on April 3 as he connected on 12-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-10 from 3-point range.
His impressive rookie season put him in some elite company, joining LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record 800+ points and 350+ assists before turning the age of 20. He’s only the third Pitt player to be selected as a NBA All-Rookie with DeJaun Blair in 2009-10 and Charles Smith in 1988-89.
Carrington is set to play once again with Washington in the NBA Summer League from July 10-20.
When Carrington last wore the No. 7, he shined at Pitt as a true freshman during the 2023-24 season. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game, on 41/32/79 shooting splits.
The 6-foot-4 Carrington scored in double digits 22 times last season, including four performances of 20-plus points, and he was the only freshman in college basketball who averaged at least 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
