Kyle Louis has played his way into All-ACC and All-American status so far this season, but he’s up for even higher accolades.
Louis has been added to the midseason Chuck Bednarik Award watchlist, which is the honor given annually to the top defensive player in college football. The semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 12, and the finalists will be announced on Nov. 26.
Aaron Donald is the lone Pitt player to have won the award, doing so in 2013.
Louis has recorded 60 tackles (26 solo), nine tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), a forced fumble and a pass breakup this season.
And he was as impactful as ever in a statement win against Syracuse last week, recording six tackles (three solo) and a 59-yard pick-six.
“We getting disrespected like nobody putting respect on our defense,” Louis said Thursday So, we hungry, we hungry for disrespect, we hungry for anybody that try to come in here and think they can disrespect us. And just think you can get away with it. We pride ourselves on being called the Sharks, like if you come in here, you better learn how to swim. It’s that simple.”
Kyle Louis has been a closer this season, helping the Panthers to big wins with standout performances:
- In Pitt’s 38-34 win over Backyard Brawl rival West Virginia, Louis collected a game-high 13 tackles and sealed the result with a game-ending interception.
- Louis also closed out the Panthers’ 34-24 win at North Carolina with a fourth-down sack in Pitt territory. He added nine tackles and 2.5 TFLs.
- In a 17-15 win over Cal, Louis had a game-high 12 tackles, two TFLs and an eight-yard sack.
- In Pitt’s most recent game, a 41-13 demolition of Syracuse, Louis had an electric 59-yard interception return for a touchdown, breaking multiple tackles along the way.
Nice! Opposing teams are gonna need a bigger boat.
