With the rise and success of their program over the last couple of seasons, the Pitt Panthers are trying to capitalize on this and target recruits in areas of the country that they normally don’t spend much time.

The Pitt staff, led by Frank Cignetti and Jonathan DiBiaso, are recruiting the state of Tennessee heavily, as they already extended offers to four junior quarterbacks.

Another example that can be shown is with a visitor they were able to attract on Tuesday.

2023 3-star tight end Zach Ortwerth, from Saint Louis University High in Saint Louis, Missouri, traveled to Pittsburgh yesterday for an unofficial visit. Pitt, like many other programs, are very excited about this 6-foot-5 220-pound player because of his athleticism and the fact that he’s new to football and just developing.

Last season was Ortwerth’s first full season playing football. Despite being relatively unknown, he has received offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Louisville, Memphis, Purdue, West Virginia and Eastern Michigan. Ortwerth received his Pitt offer back on February 16th from Charlie Partridge.

The day after his visit to Pat Narduzzi’s program, Pittsburgh Sports Now caught up with Ortwerth to learn more about his relationship with Pitt and to get his thoughts on what he saw.

“I wanted to get to Pitt because I had been talking with their coaches and they were saying how once I visit, I would get to see everything and be blown away,” said Ortwerth. “So, the timing was right, I was on spring break and I could get here and it was worth it. Pitt won the ACC last year and will continue to be able to play for another conference championship.”

“The day was great, I was able to watch practice and see the energy the players had at practice. It was important to see how the practice was in order to see if it would be a good fit for me. I was able to talk with Coach Salem and Coach Narduzzi and we talked about how I would be used and how you would have a chance to compete for an ACC Championship.”

This visit to Pitt will be the start of a busy month for Ortwerth as he’s also scheduled visits to Michigan State (March 17), Michigan (March 18), Minnesota (March 25), Iowa (March 26) and Illinois (March 31).

“The visit was great and I will continue to build a relationship with the coaches because I had a good visit.”
